Browser Update

Initiative to encourage NYU.edu users with out-dated browsers (IE6 in particular) to update.

As a front end developer for NYU, I spent a significant amount of time creating work-arounds and fixes for outdated browsers. Not only does this slow down development time it also prevents us from using new technologies. To remedy this problem, I lead the initiative to send a "Browser Update" message to old browsers, which informed users why they should update. Doing so allowed us to "downgrade" support of IE6 and take major steps forward in:

  • Reducing development time
  • Lowering developers' blood pressure (frustration / headaches)
  • Allowing use of more current technologies (html5, css3)
  • Educating users about old browser deficiencies
  • Helping move the web into the future
